The Pharmacy Council is made up of 10 members, 5 of whom are pharmacists with a NSW principal place of practice who are elected by NSW pharmacists. Members are elected for a 3 year term commencing 1 April 2019.
The primary function of the Council is public protection. The Council achieves this by managing complaints that relate to the conduct, performance and health of pharmacists in NSW and conduct and health matters involving NSW pharmacy students, and by regulating NSW pharmacies.
What are the essential attributes of a Council member?
Members should have an understanding of their public duty and in undertaking their functions must promote confidence in the integrity of public administration. Members should act honestly and in the public interest, rather than their private interests. A high standard of integrity, impartiality, conscientiousness, accountability, transparency, fairness, care, skill, diligence and loyalty to the public interest is therefore essential. They should be proactive and make a positive contribution to discussions and decision-making and be willing to abide by the majority decision. They should possess a level of professional skill and knowledge reflective of their role as decision maker and regulator.
What time commitment is required of a Council member?
The Council meets on the afternoon of the 2nd Wednesday of each month. In addition, the Council has 6 subcommittees and members sit on one or more of these committees which meet either on the morning of the Council meeting or on other ad hoc days. In addition, Council members sit on panels and hearings, and conduct counselling sessions and interviews as part of the management of complaints.
Members are expected to attend monthly Council meetings and to participate in Committee and hearing work. Members should allow the necessary time to prepare for meetings, hearings and other regulatory activities and to write reports as needed.
